Eye-Fixation Patterns During Reading Confirm Theories of Language Comprehension
نویسندگان
چکیده
Eye-movement patterns during reading are consistent with proposition-byproposition models of speech comprehension. (1) Fixation times ore least offected by word length ot ends of clauses: this confirms the theory based on the study of speech comprehension that, at such points, attention is directed inward to text integration. (2) Fixotion time for words ot the end of clauses is longer for canonical sequences which conform to the pattern, “N-V-N=octoroctian-object”; this confirms the view that complete semantic integration of such sequences is routinely delayed until their completion. A two-variable model based on principles of exhoustive visual scorch ond speech comprehension accounts for 80% of the fixotion durotions in a sample parograph from Just and Carpenter (1980) and Thibodeou, Just ond Carpenter (1982). This comprehension-based model compares favorably with their models constructed within a production-system framework. This result clarifies the relotianship between reading and listening.

Individual Differences in Eye-Movements During Reading: Working Memory and Speed-of-Processing Effects.
Theories of eye-movement control in reading should ultimately describe how differences in knowledge and cognitive abilities affect reading and comprehension. Current mathematical models of eye-movement control do not yet incorporate individual differences as a source of variation in reading, although developmental and group-difference effects have been studied. These models nonetheless provide ...
متن کاملPower-law fluctuations in eye movements predict text comprehension during connected text reading
The present study investigates the relation between the reading process and text comprehension during naturalistic text reading. To that end, participants read easy and difficult texts while their eye movements were recorded. After each reading, participants filled-in comprehension questionnaires. We investigated classical measures of the reading process related to comprehension (fixation durat...
متن کاملThe Relation between Reading Skills and Eye Movement Patterns in Adolescent Readers: Evidence from a Regular Orthography
Over the past decades, the relation between reading skills and eye movement behavior has been well documented in English-speaking cohorts. As English and German differ substantially with regard to orthographic complexity (i.e. grapheme-phoneme correspondence), we aimed to delineate specific characteristics of how reading speed and reading comprehension interact with eye movements in typically d...

Reading development and instruction is a pedagogical priority at all academic levels. Historically, in the educational field, numerous efforts have been made to facilitate the complex process of foreign language reading comprehension. More recently, increasing attention has been paid to the use of computers for developing reading comprehension skills and various efforts have been made in this r...
متن کاملSimple Sentence Reading and Specific Cognitive Functions in College
Over 80% of students with learning disabilities experience difficulty reading [1] and large numbers of these students wish to pursue postsecondary education in spite of their academic challenges [2]. A greater number of students with learning disabilities are enrolling in colleges and universities than ever before [3,4]. Hence, there is a need for more systematic and in-depth study of profiles ...
